Gov. Brown: Don’t leave people on death row

California Governor Jerry Brown has less than a month left in his final term. Before he leaves office, he has the power to grant clemency to any or all of the 750 people on death row.

Our friends and state partners in California, Death Penalty Focus, have started a petition, asking Governor Brown to grant clemency to as many people on death row as possible. Please sign the petition now!

We know that California’s justice system makes deadly mistakes. Five men have been exonerated and freed from death row after evidence revealed that they were sentenced to die for crimes they did not commit. Just this year, a man was released when the state Supreme Court ruled that he was convicted by evidence that was “false, extensive, pervasive, and impactful.” Scores of others were convicted using the same junk science.

California’s failed system has given them the largest death row in the Western Hemisphere. Countless numbers of people there suffer from mental illness, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and the lingering effects of addiction, poverty, and extreme childhood abuse. Two thirds of them are people of color. Nearly half were teenagers or young adults when they were sentenced to death.

Sign the petition to ask Governor Brown to to remove as many people as possible from death row before he leaves. Anyone can sign – you don’t need to be from California.

Please act now to make your voice heard. We need thousands more signatures from all around the world to deliver Governor Brown next week. Together, we can make a real difference.

Thank you for all that you do for justice
