Our Former Programs

The Books to Prisons Project and the Grassroots Investigation Project

EJUSA was part of the Quixote Center from 1990-2008. Two of our projects stayed at the Quixote Center after EJUSA spun off in July 2008. If you are looking for them, please contact the Quixote Center.

  • DC Area Books to Prisons Project: Provides free reading materials to prisoners for their education and entertainment, and works as a critical link between those who are incarcerated and those outside the prison walls. Since 1999 the project has sent thousands of free books to prisoners in all 50 states and has helped build or expand more than 10 libraries in different DC prison units. If you would like to receive books or have books to donate, contact the DC Area Books to Prisons Project at bookstoprisons [at] mutualaid [dot] org.
  • Grassroots Investigation Project (GRIP): Now affiliated with the National Death Row Assistance Network. Provides support and training to family and allies of those on death row to take an active role in their loved ones’ cases. In its role as a dynamic hub between lawyers, law students, academics, innocence projects, and prisoners, GRIP also assists with the preparation and distribution of critical legal documents. The project kicked off with the launch of the groundbreaking report, Reasonable Doubts: Is the U.S. Executing Innocent People? [pdf] in 2000, and published the Capital Case Handbook for Defendants and Their Families [pdf] a few years later. GRIP also publishes Cell Door Magazine, a magazine written by prisoners and those who are touched by the prison experience. See also the Quixote Center's Justice Matters program.
